OWA not working for users in one domain, on one server, everyone else is fine

Hoping someone has seen something like this before or can give me a nudge in the right direction.

We look after 4 companies, a holding company and 3 sub companies. We have a forest root and 3 domains under it. We have already rolled out Exchange 2010 to one of the three domains, and we have a CAS in that domain which is exposed to the internet and is our primary activesync/owa/etc destination. I have just added a new Exchange 2010 server to the next domain, mail for that company is still Exchange 2003. Things are operational there except hitting our external OWA destination is not working for users of that domain.

Logging in directly to the new server https://newserver/owa works. Moving a mailbox from the new server to one of the old servers in the other domain results in the mailbox working. However when trying to login to a mailbox that resides on the new exchange server, results in:

Outlook Web App isn't available. If the problem continues, please contact your helpdesk.

Is this possibly a trust issue as the external owa/activesync CAS is in a different domain? Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any replies.
